Hydropool Hot Tubs and Swim Spas

Jets can do two things in a swim spa: They can power the swim although not all swim spas use this method. And they can power your massage, if your swim spa offers hydrotherapy.

By understanding their types, benefits and maintenance tips, you can make the most out of your swim spa and better understand how it works.

At Hydropool, we are asked about jets at our retailers because we use swim jets to create the current that you swim against in the spa. That’s why we wanted to write this piece.

Most swim spa manufacturers use jets to create the current, but there are a couple of other manufacturers who also use a propeller-style system. Some of our swim jets are patented, and some are off-the shelf. We will go through everything we offer and do an overview of what’s out there in the market as well.

By the end, we hope you’ll be an expert at swim spa jets!

What Are Swim Spa Jets?

Swim spa jets are specially designed nozzles that are strategically positioned within your swim spa to push water and create either resistance in the form of a current or massage, if their purpose is hydrotherapy.

What are the Types of Swim Spa Jets?

Understanding the different types of swim spa jets will help you utilize your swim spa more effectively.

  • Swim Jets: These jets are specifically designed to create a current strong enough for stationary swimming. This allows you to enjoy an effective swimming workout without needing a large pool. Some have adjustable resistance which make them suitable for all fitness levels.
  • Buoyancy Jets: This is a jet often located on the side of the swim spa or underneath the main swim jets. Their purpose is to provide additional support and help you remain in place in the current, so that your focus can be on swimming.
  • Hydrotherapy Jets: These jets focus on providing therapeutic massages to specific muscle groups. They are ideal for relieving muscle pain, improving circulation, and aiding in recovery. If you’ve sat in a hot tub, chances are you’ve experienced hydrotherapy jets before.
  • Air Jets: These jets release air bubbles into the water to enhance the massage experience. The gentle bubbling effect provides a soothing and relaxing sensation that can help relieve stress.

How Do Swim Spa Jets Work?

Understanding the mechanics of swim spa jets can help you appreciate their functionality and manage their settings better. The process begins with water being drawn from the spa, pressurized through a pump, and then expelled through the jets. You can adjust both the flow and pressure to meet your specific needs, whether that’s a gentle massage from hydrotherapy jets or a strong swimming current when you’re feeling energetic.

To fully appreciate how swim spa jets work, it’s helpful to understand their key components:

  • Pump: The heart of the jet system, the pump is responsible for creating the necessary water pressure. There are different types of pumps, including single-speed and variable-speed pumps. Variable-speed pumps are more energy-efficient and allow for more precise control. They can also be referred to as motors.
  • Nozzles: The nozzles direct the flow of water to where it is needed most. They come in various shapes and sizes, each designed for different effects, such as focused streams for targeted massage or broader streams for swimming currents.
  • Control System: This allows you to adjust the pressure and direction of the jets, tailoring the experience to your preferences. Modern control systems on many swim spas are often digital and can be adjusted via remote controls or even smartphone apps for added convenience.

A good swim spa will allow you to the change the jet speed to adjust to the level of swim you’d prefer.

What Are the Benefits of Swim Spa Jets?

Swim spa jets offer a range of benefits that contribute to your overall wellness and fitness.

  • Exercise Benefits: Swim jets enable a stationary swimming workout, providing adjustable resistance that matches your fitness level. This is particularly beneficial for those who want to maintain a consistent swim training regimen without the need for a full-sized swimming pool.
  • Improved Cardiovascular Health: Regular swimming workouts can improve cardiovascular health, helping to lower blood pressure and increase stamina.
  • Muscle Toning: The resistance provided by swim jets helps in muscle toning and building strength.
  • Therapy Benefits: Therapy jets can target specific muscles, helping to alleviate pain after working out and improve circulation.
  • Improved Mobility: Regular use of therapy jets can improve mobility by loosening tight muscles and increasing circulation to affected areas.
  • Stress Relief: The soothing effect of hydrotherapy jets can provide a peaceful escape from the pressures of daily life.

Note: It’s important to note that we aren’t making any health claims here. We aren’t doctors and we consider the swim spa a wellness product, not a medical product. Anyone seeking medical help from their swim spa should speak to their family doctor.

How to Maintain Your Swim Spa Jets

Jets usually require minimal effort for any swim spa owner. Make it a habit to check the nozzles for any debris that could obstruct water flow. Keeping them clear will ensure optimal performance. Use a soft brush to open up the nozzles if anything is required.
